Breath is something we do every moment of our lives—often without even noticing. But what if I told you that something as natural and intuitive as breathing holds the key to unlocking deep emotional healing, easing anxiety, and transforming stress?
For many families living fast-paced, high-stress lives across Sydney’s North Shore & Northern Beaches, breathwork is becoming more than a wellness trend—it’s becoming a lifeline.
In this article, I want to lovingly walk you through the science behind breathwork, and why it works so powerfully for emotional release, nervous system healing, and creating true inner calm.
Your Breath and Your Nervous System
Let’s begin with the basics.
Your breath is directly connected to your autonomic nervous system—the system responsible for managing your body’s automatic functions like heart rate, digestion, and stress response.
This system has two main branches:
- The sympathetic nervous system, which is activated during stress (fight, flight, or freeze)
- The parasympathetic nervous system, which is activated during rest, healing, and calm
When you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or emotionally charged, your breath often becomes short, shallow, and rapid, keeping you stuck in a heightened state of stress.
We are facing a respiratory crisis! A lot of people tend to breathe too much. This excessive breathing can raise your heart rate, tighten your muscles, and trigger even more breathing. It creates a loop—more breathing leads to more stress and anxiety, which leads to even more breathing. Most of us were never taught how to interrupt this pattern in order to restore our health, energy, and sense of balance. Learning to breathe differently is about reversing this process. In simple terms: breathe less, and you’ll feel less stressed.
- Most people breathe between 14-20 breaths per minute.
- A healthy person with healthy respiration actually breathes between 8-12 breaths per minute. When you breathe in this rhythm, all our bodily systems fall into place.
Conscious breathwork flips the switch.
When you breathe slowly and intentionally, you signal to the body that it’s safe—activating your parasympathetic nervous system and allowing you to relax, release, and restore.
The Role of the Vagus Nerve
One of the key scientific reasons breathwork is so effective lies in the vagus nerve.
This powerful nerve runs from your brainstem through your lungs, heart, and digestive system. It’s the major communicator between your brain and body—and it plays a crucial role in regulating emotions and stress.
Deep breathing stimulates the vagus nerve, which helps:
- Lower your heart rate
- Reduce inflammation
- Calm the mind
- Regulate emotional responses
This is why, after just a few minutes of breathwork, you might feel your shoulders drop, your jaw soften, or even a few tears rise to the surface. It’s your body saying: Thank you. I can let go now.
How Breathwork Helps With Emotional Release
Emotions are energy. And when we suppress them—through distraction, overworking, or simply not having space to feel—they often stay trapped in the body.
Conscious breathwork:
- Increases oxygen flow, giving your cells and brain the fuel to heal
- Allows repressed feelings (like grief, anger, or fear) to surface and release
- Bypasses overthinking and connects you to your body’s innate wisdom
Many people describe breathwork as the first time they’ve truly felt something in years. Not because it wasn’t there—but because breathwork finally gave them a safe path to access it.
Breathwork for Anxiety and Stress
Chronic stress and anxiety often come from living in a hyper-alert state. Your body is bracing for the next problem, your thoughts are racing, and your system is overloaded.
Breathwork disrupts that loop.
Through simple techniques—like box breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, or conscious connected breath—you can:
- Calm anxious thoughts
- Interrupt stress cycles
- Reconnect with your centre
- Restore emotional balance
You don’t need to meditate for hours or escape to a retreat. Your breath is always with you, always available, and always enough.
The Magic of Combining Science and Soul
I love the science of breathwork—but what I love even more is witnessing the real-life transformation it brings to the people I work with.
The science tells us how breathwork works. But your body will show you why it matters.
You’ll feel it in the clarity that follows a deep session.
You’ll feel it in the softness that returns to your body.
You’ll feel it in the tears that finally find permission to fall—and the peace that follows.
