Healing the Inner Child with Breathwork: A Gentle Path to Self-Discovery

Healing the Inner Child with Breathwork: A Gentle Path to Self-Discovery

There’s a younger version of you who still lives within.
She might be playful, sensitive, scared, hopeful, or hurting.
She may be holding onto unspoken pain, unmet needs, or quiet longing.

This part of you—your inner child—isn’t something to outgrow or fix.
She is someone to reconnect with. To honour. To love.

And one of the most powerful, nurturing ways to do that is through breathwork.

If you’re curious about inner child healing, or you’ve felt the ache of old wounds you can’t quite explain, this gentle practice might be the path you’ve been looking for.

Who Is the Inner Child?

Your inner child is the emotional part of you that was shaped in childhood.
She remembers everything: the joy, the fear, the rejection, the wonder, the unmet needs, the moments where you felt unseen, unheard, or unsafe.

And even if you’ve “moved on” as an adult, she lives in your nervous system, your unconscious patterns, your reactions. She shows up when you feel triggered, overly anxious, or stuck in self-doubt. And she whispers in the background when you’re craving love or validation.

Why Talk Therapy Isn’t Always Enough

Many of us have tried to think or talk our way out of emotional pain — but some wounds live deeper than words. I spent years in therapy, having insightful, emotionally intelligent conversations. I knew the tools. I understood my patterns. I could explain my healing journey in perfect detail.

But still… I couldn’t let go. I couldn’t fully heal. I couldn’t stop feeling so much.

Because healing doesn’t happen just in the mind — it happens in the body. Our pain lives in our breath, our muscles, our nervous system… in the places we’ve avoided, or never known how to reach.

There’s a massive difference between understanding transformation and actually embodying it. Real healing doesn’t click in your head — it moves through your body and rewires who you are on a cellular level. That’s the shift. That’s the power.

This is where breathwork becomes a profound healing tool. It bypasses the analytical mind and goes straight to the body’s wisdom—where the inner child lives.

How Breathwork Supports Inner Child Healing

Breathwork is an embodied practice. It creates a safe space for emotional memories and sensations to rise, without needing to force or analyse them.

Through conscious breathing, you can:

  • Create safety in your nervous system
The inner child often holds fear. Breathwork calms the body and reminds her she’s no longer in danger.
  • Access stored emotions and energy
Sometimes we don’t even realise we’re holding old grief, anger, or abandonment until it begins to move through the breath.
  • Build self-compassion and self-trust
As you breathe through these layers, you begin to build a nurturing relationship with yourself—offering your younger self the love and reassurance she once needed.
  • Reconnect with joy and creativity
Healing isn’t just about pain. It’s about remembering who you were before the world told you who to be. The breath invites your inner child to come out and play again.

What to Expect in a Breathwork Session for Inner Child Healing

In our sessions together, you’ll be guided into a supportive, grounded space—whether in person or online.

We start with intention. You might want to explore a specific emotion, memory, or simply invite your inner child forward. Then we begin breathing—softly, rhythmically, and with gentle guidance. (In some cases I may use Timeline Therapy™ or Therapeutic Hypnosis prior to your breathwork journey.)

There may be tears. There may be warmth. There may be moments of deep silence or emotional release. All of it is welcome.
Your breath knows the way. I simply hold the space.

A Gentle Reminder

Healing your inner child isn’t about digging up trauma. It’s about creating a space where your younger self finally feels seen, held, and free to be exactly who she is.

And breathwork offers that safety—without force, without pressure, and without needing to “fix” anything.

You Are Worth This Healing

If you’ve been feeling heavy with emotions you can’t name, or patterns that won’t shift no matter how hard you try—know this:

Your inner child is calling for your attention, not your perfection.

Through breathwork, you can answer that call with love, softness, and the presence she’s always needed.

You’re invited to book a private breathwork session with me, or explore the shared healing space of a couples breathwork session if relationship wounds are part of what your inner child is carrying.

Let your breath become the bridge back to yourself.

Can’t Meditate? Here’s Why Breathwork Might Be the Missing Piece

Can’t Meditate? Here’s Why Breathwork Might Be the Missing Piece

Let’s be honest:
You’ve tried meditation. You sat still. You closed your eyes. You tried to quiet your mind… but the thoughts kept coming.
What’s for dinner?
Did I send that email?
Why can’t I stop thinking?

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and you haven’t failed. You’re human.

For so many women I work with across Sydney’s North, meditation sounds like a dream but feels like a struggle. And that’s where breathwork becomes the missing piece.

Let me explain why.

Why Meditation Doesn’t Always Work

Meditation is a beautiful practice—but it often asks us to be still and calm, even when our bodies and minds are anything but.

And in a world where you’re constantly juggling family, work, mental load, and emotional stress, simply sitting and “thinking of nothing” can feel impossible.

Here’s what I want you to know:
You don’t need to force stillness to find peace.
You just need to give your body and nervous system a way in. That’s what breathwork does.

What Is Breathwork?

Breathwork is the intentional practice of using your breath to shift your physical, mental, and emotional state.

Unlike meditation, breathwork is active, meaning you’re doing something with your body—breathing in specific patterns to help you focus, release, and regulate.

It doesn’t require silence.
It doesn’t require an empty mind.
It simply asks you to breathe with presence—and let your body lead the way.

Why Breathwork Might Be What You’ve Been Looking For

If meditation feels frustrating, boring, or overwhelming, breathwork offers a different path, one that meets you where you are.

Here’s why it works:

  • It gets you out of your head and into your body
You don’t need to battle your thoughts. The breath creates a rhythm that gently brings you into the present.
  • It gives your busy mind something to focus on
Instead of resisting thoughts, breathwork invites focus on breathing patterns, sensations, and sound—making it easier to drop in.
  • It moves energy and emotion
If you’re holding onto stress, grief, or anxiety, breathwork can help shift it through your system—no words needed.
  • It creates calm through action
You’re not sitting in stillness—you’re actively doing something that creates space for calm to naturally arise.

Many women tell me after their first session:
“I’ve never felt this relaxed before—without even trying.”

From Resistance to Release

One of my beautiful clients recently shared that she’d avoided all things “mindfulness” for years because she just couldn’t get into meditation. It made her feel like a failure, like something was wrong with her.

Then she tried breathwork.

And in one session, something shifted. Not because her thoughts disappeared, but because her body felt safe enough to soften. Her nervous system settled. Her tears came freely. And for the first time in a long time, she felt stillness without having to fight for it.

That’s the power of the breath.

A Gentle Invitation

If meditation hasn’t worked for you, it doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.
It might just mean you need a different entry point.

Breathwork can be your bridge.
The one that gently carries you from mental overwhelm to emotional clarity. From physical tension to inner peace.

Whether you’re new to the practice or simply ready to try something that feels a little more aligned with your pace of life, I’d love to hold space for you.

You’re invited to book a one-on-one breathwork session with me, or if you’re seeking connection with a loved one, try a couples breathwork session to regulate, reconnect, and breathe together.

You don’t need to silence your mind.
You just need to start with your breath.

The Science Behind Breathwork: Why It Works for Stress, Anxiety & Emotional Release

The Science Behind Breathwork: Why It Works for Stress, Anxiety & Emotional Release

Breath is something we do every moment of our lives—often without even noticing. But what if I told you that something as natural and intuitive as breathing holds the key to unlocking deep emotional healing, easing anxiety, and transforming stress?

For many families living fast-paced, high-stress lives across Sydney’s North Shore & Northern Beaches, breathwork is becoming more than a wellness trend—it’s becoming a lifeline.

In this article, I want to lovingly walk you through the science behind breathwork, and why it works so powerfully for emotional release, nervous system healing, and creating true inner calm.

Your Breath and Your Nervous System

Let’s begin with the basics.

Your breath is directly connected to your autonomic nervous system—the system responsible for managing your body’s automatic functions like heart rate, digestion, and stress response.

This system has two main branches:

  • The sympathetic nervous system, which is activated during stress (fight, flight, or freeze)
  • The parasympathetic nervous system, which is activated during rest, healing, and calm

When you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or emotionally charged, your breath often becomes short, shallow, and rapid, keeping you stuck in a heightened state of stress.

We are facing a respiratory crisis! A lot of people tend to breathe too much. This excessive breathing can raise your heart rate, tighten your muscles, and trigger even more breathing. It creates a loop—more breathing leads to more stress and anxiety, which leads to even more breathing. Most of us were never taught how to interrupt this pattern in order to restore our health, energy, and sense of balance. Learning to breathe differently is about reversing this process. In simple terms: breathe less, and you’ll feel less stressed.

  • Most people breathe between 14-20 breaths per minute.
  • A healthy person with healthy respiration actually breathes between 8-12 breaths per minute. When you breathe in this rhythm, all our bodily systems fall into place.

Conscious breathwork flips the switch.
When you breathe slowly and intentionally, you signal to the body that it’s safe—activating your parasympathetic nervous system and allowing you to relax, release, and restore.

The Role of the Vagus Nerve

One of the key scientific reasons breathwork is so effective lies in the vagus nerve.

This powerful nerve runs from your brainstem through your lungs, heart, and digestive system. It’s the major communicator between your brain and body—and it plays a crucial role in regulating emotions and stress.

Deep breathing stimulates the vagus nerve, which helps:

  • Lower your heart rate
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Calm the mind
  • Regulate emotional responses

This is why, after just a few minutes of breathwork, you might feel your shoulders drop, your jaw soften, or even a few tears rise to the surface. It’s your body saying: Thank you. I can let go now.

How Breathwork Helps With Emotional Release

Emotions are energy. And when we suppress them—through distraction, overworking, or simply not having space to feel—they often stay trapped in the body.

Conscious breathwork:

  • Increases oxygen flow, giving your cells and brain the fuel to heal
  • Allows repressed feelings (like grief, anger, or fear) to surface and release
  • Bypasses overthinking and connects you to your body’s innate wisdom

Many people describe breathwork as the first time they’ve truly felt something in years. Not because it wasn’t there—but because breathwork finally gave them a safe path to access it.

Breathwork for Anxiety and Stress

Chronic stress and anxiety often come from living in a hyper-alert state. Your body is bracing for the next problem, your thoughts are racing, and your system is overloaded.

Breathwork disrupts that loop.

Through simple techniques—like box breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, or conscious connected breath—you can:

  • Calm anxious thoughts
  • Interrupt stress cycles
  • Reconnect with your centre
  • Restore emotional balance

You don’t need to meditate for hours or escape to a retreat. Your breath is always with you, always available, and always enough.

The Magic of Combining Science and Soul

I love the science of breathwork—but what I love even more is witnessing the real-life transformation it brings to the people I work with.

The science tells us how breathwork works. But your body will show you why it matters.

You’ll feel it in the clarity that follows a deep session.
You’ll feel it in the softness that returns to your body.
You’ll feel it in the tears that finally find permission to fall—and the peace that follows.

Ready to Experience It for Yourself?

If you’re navigating stress, emotional overwhelm, or simply seeking a deeper connection to yourself, breathwork can support you in ways that are both scientifically sound and spiritually profound.

How Breathwork Supports Nervous System Regulation in High-Stress Lifestyles

How Breathwork Supports Nervous System Regulation in High-Stress Lifestyles

Life in today’s world can feel like a constant push—emails, deadlines, family responsibilities, social pressures, and the never-ending mental load. For many women across Sydney’s North Shore and Northern Beaches, the pressure to “keep it all together” is an everyday reality.

If you find yourself operating in overdrive, unable to relax, and feeling constantly “on edge,” you’re not alone. You may be experiencing nervous system dysregulation—and your breath could be the key to restoring balance.

Let’s gently explore how breathwork supports the nervous system and why it’s one of the most powerful tools for navigating high-stress lifestyles.

Understanding the Nervous System

Our nervous system is the body’s internal command centre. It determines how we respond to stress, how we relax, how we recover, and how safe we feel.

There are two main branches:

  • The Sympathetic Nervous System (fight, flight, or freeze)
  • The Parasympathetic Nervous System (rest, digest, and restore)

In a balanced state, we flow naturally between the two. But in high-stress lifestyles, we tend to get stuck in the sympathetic mode—always switched on, alert, and bracing for what’s next.

This constant state of hypervigilance can lead to:

  • Anxiety or panic
  • Sleep problems
  • Chronic tension and fatigue
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Emotional reactivity
  • Chronic health issues and/or chronic pain

Over time, the body forgets how to come down from stress. That’s where breathwork comes in.

Breathwork: A Direct Line to Calm

Breathwork is one of the few tools that gives us conscious control over the nervous system.

When you breathe slowly and intentionally, you send a powerful signal to your body: You are safe.
This activates the parasympathetic nervous system, allowing the body to soften, the mind to quiet, and healing to begin.

In my sessions, I’ve seen women go from anxious and scattered to grounded and present—often in a single session. The shift is real. The relief is tangible.

Breathwork Helps You:

  • Shift from survival mode to safety
By regulating your breath, you regulate your emotional state. You can move from reactivity to resilience.
  • Release trapped tension and emotion
Unprocessed stress lives in the body. Conscious breathing allows you to gently release it without needing to talk it through.
  • Rebuild emotional safety and trust in your body
When your nervous system is supported, you start to feel safe in your skin again—able to trust your gut, set boundaries, and respond with clarity.
  • Restore energy and presence
Breathwork helps break the burnout cycle. It teaches your body how to rest deeply, even in short moments.

For the Women Doing It All

Whether you’re a busy mum, a professional woman managing a high workload, or someone quietly carrying emotional strain, your nervous system deserves support.

Breathwork is simple, accessible, and incredibly effective. It meets you right where you are—with no need to explain, justify, or perform.

In our work together, you’ll be guided in a safe, supportive environment to gently unwind, reconnect with your breath, and regulate your nervous system with tools you can carry into everyday life. I will set you up with breath flows and exercises that are right for YOU and where you’re currently at in your life. (ie: if you have been through trauma, your breathwork and healing journey will look a lot different to someone who is simply navigating every day stresses and wants to feel more centred. Your safety is my priority, and your healing journey will be set at a pace that feels right for you.)

Breathwork vs. Meditation: Which One Do You Need Right Now?

Breathwork vs. Meditation: Which One Do You Need Right Now?

In the world of wellness and self-care, there’s no shortage of tools designed to help us find calm, clarity, and emotional balance. Two of the most powerful—and often compared—are breathwork and meditation.

Both are ancient practices. Both can transform your state of mind. And both are becoming increasingly popular across Sydney, especially among women seeking grounded, soulful ways to cope with modern life.

But if you’ve ever found yourself wondering, “Which one is right for me right now?”—you’re not alone. Let’s take a gentle walk through both, so you can feel into what your body, mind and spirit truly need.

What Is Meditation?

Meditation is a stillness practice. It invites you to slow down, quiet the mind, and be present. Often practised by sitting in silence or focusing on a mantra, breath, or visualisation, meditation helps calm the nervous system, improve focus, and increase self-awareness.

Meditation works best when practised regularly, even if just for a few minutes a day. It’s like giving your mind a rest from the constant to-do lists, expectations, and mental chatter.

Many locals in Sydney’s North find meditation helpful for:

  • Managing daily stress
  • Improving sleep
  • Cultivating patience
  • Becoming more self-aware
  • Feeling more grounded in busy seasons of life

But while meditation is a beautiful tool for quieting the mind, it isn’t always easy—especially if you’re carrying emotional weight or struggle to sit still.

What Is Breathwork?

Breathwork is an active practice that uses conscious breathing to move energy through the body. It can be calming, activating, or deeply emotional—depending on the style used.

While meditation helps calm the mind, breathwork goes deeper by directly influencing the body’s physiology. By regulating your breath, you not only quiet mental chatter but also improve oxygen delivery to your cells through better carbon dioxide balance — something meditation alone doesn’t address. Breathwork activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reduces stress hormones, and optimizes cellular function, making it a more immediate and physically transformative practice than meditation. It doesn’t just change how you think — it changes how your body functions.

Here’s the science part, made simple: your body actually needs a certain level of carbon dioxide (CO₂) to unlock oxygen from your blood and deliver it to your cells. When you breathe too much — even just from stress or anxiety — you lose too much CO₂, and your cells end up getting less oxygen, not more. Breathwork helps you slow your breathing, restore that balance, and make oxygen usable again. So instead of just “taking deep breaths,” you’re training your body to function more efficiently — physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Breathwork is ideal when you want to:

  • Release stuck or stored emotions
  • Regulate your nervous system
  • Shift energy quickly
  • Access clarity or spiritual connection
  • Feel more alive and present in your body

I often describe breathwork as a doorway. It invites you to walk through old stories, limiting beliefs, or heavy emotions, and come out the other side feeling lighter, clearer, and more connected to yourself.

Key Differences at a Glance

Practice Breathwork Meditation
Type Active, physical process Still, mental focus
Goal Emotional release, nervous system reset Mental calm, presence, awareness
Access Point Body and breath Mind and awareness
Ideal For When you’re feeling stuck, heavy or overwhelmed When you’re seeking quiet, focus or clarity
Energy Can be activating or grounding Usually calming or neutral

So, Which One Do You Need Right Now?

That depends on where you’re at.

If you’re feeling anxious, emotionally overwhelmed, exhausted or disconnected from your body—breathwork may be the more supportive path. It gives you something to do with those emotions. It helps move what words can’t always express.

If you’re simply feeling overstimulated and mentally scattered, and you’re craving quiet or focus—meditation may be just what you need. It offers stillness, a return to simplicity, and a chance to just be.

Here’s the truth: both are powerful. Both are valid. And both have a place in your wellness toolkit.

Sometimes we need to move. Sometimes we need to sit still. And learning to listen to what your body is asking for in each moment is the real magic.

What Is Breathwork? A Beginner’s Guide

What Is Breathwork? A Beginner’s Guide

Take a deep breath with me. Inhale… and exhale.
Feel that? That’s the beginning of something powerful.

If you’ve been hearing the word breathwork floating around yoga studios, wellness circles, or coffee dates with friends in Sydney’s North, you’re not alone. Breathwork is growing in popularity—and for good reason. This beautiful practice is helping people just like you reconnect with their body, quiet their mind, and release emotions stored deep within.

But what exactly is breathwork? And why are more women, mums, and mindful professionals across Sydney turning to it for healing and clarity?

Let’s gently explore.

So, What Is Breathwork?

A lot of people tend to breathe too much. This excessive breathing can raise your heart rate, tighten your muscles, and trigger even more breathing. It creates a loop—more breathing leads to more stress and anxiety, which leads to even more breathing. Most of us were never taught how to interrupt this pattern in order to restore our health, energy, and sense of balance. Learning to breathe differently is about reversing this process. In simple terms: breathe less, and you’ll feel less stressed.

Most people breathe between 14-20 breaths per minute.

A healthy person with healthy respiration actually breathes between 8-12 breaths per minute. When you breathe in this rhythm, all our bodily systems fall into place.

At its core, breathwork is the intentional practice of changing the way you breathe to influence your physical, emotional, and energetic state.

That might sound simple, but the impact is anything but. Our breath is directly linked to our nervous system. It reflects how we feel—and also influences how we feel. When we breathe consciously and fully, we tell our body it’s safe. We allow it to relax, to release, and to reset.

There are many styles of breathwork, from slow and restorative to fast and transformational. Whether you’re seeking emotional healing, spiritual connection, or simply a quiet space to be, breathwork meets you where you are.

The Gentle Power of the Breath

Most of us go through our days breathing shallowly and unconsciously—especially when life gets busy. And let’s be honest, living in Sydney, we’re no strangers to the juggle. Between school drop-offs, long commutes, demanding careers, and full calendars, it’s easy to slip into survival mode.

But here’s the magic:
When you return to your breath, you return to yourself.

Breathwork can help with:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Sleep issues
  • Back and shoulder pain
  • Emotional overwhelm
  • Low energy
  • Improved blood flow
  • Creative blocks
  • Healing past emotional wounds

And the best part? It doesn’t require anything but you and your breath.

What Happens in a Breathwork Session?

With me, Beth Lewis, sessions are always held in a calm, welcoming space— in-person in Sydney’s North.

We begin with checking in with how you’re feeling emotionally, physically, and energetically, then slowly start to ground you into presence. I’ll guide you through carefully curated breath flows tailored to your personal needs. Sometimes this is deeply calming; other times it may help move stuck energy or release stored emotions.

There’s often music, (including sound healing and Reiki), soft guidance, and space for tears, laughter, or stillness. Every session is unique—just like you.

Who Is Breathwork For?

Breathwork is for anyone who:

  • Feels stuck, tired, or disconnected
  • Carries emotional stress, anxiety, or past trauma
  • Craves a deeper connection with themselves
  • Wants to feel more peaceful, aligned, and present
  • Struggles with health issues and/or chronic pain

Whether you’re a mum who rarely gets time to herself, a professional burning the candle at both ends, or simply curious about a more intuitive way to support your well-being—breathwork can be your sanctuary.

A Loving Invitation

You don’t need to be a “spiritual person.” You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to show up—with your breath and a willingness to soften.

As someone who’s walked through stress, overwhelm, and self-disconnection, I’ve witnessed first-hand the transformation that happens when we remember how to breathe again—with intention.

If you’re ready to experience the calm, clarity, connection, and transformation to your overall wellbeing breathwork can bring, I invite you to book a session with me today. Whether it’s a one-on-one breathwork session or a couples breathwork session to help you both reconnect and deepen your bond, you’ll be held in a safe, nurturing space designed just for you.

Book your breathwork session with Beth Lewis today. Reconnect with yourself, or with your partner, one breath at a time.
