What Is Breathwork? A Beginner’s Guide
Take a deep breath with me. Inhale… and exhale.
Feel that? That’s the beginning of something powerful.
If you’ve been hearing the word breathwork floating around yoga studios, wellness circles, or coffee dates with friends in Sydney’s North, you’re not alone. Breathwork is growing in popularity—and for good reason. This beautiful practice is helping people just like you reconnect with their body, quiet their mind, and release emotions stored deep within.
But what exactly is breathwork? And why are more women, mums, and mindful professionals across Sydney turning to it for healing and clarity?
Let’s gently explore.
So, What Is Breathwork?
A lot of people tend to breathe too much. This excessive breathing can raise your heart rate, tighten your muscles, and trigger even more breathing. It creates a loop—more breathing leads to more stress and anxiety, which leads to even more breathing. Most of us were never taught how to interrupt this pattern in order to restore our health, energy, and sense of balance. Learning to breathe differently is about reversing this process. In simple terms: breathe less, and you’ll feel less stressed.
Most people breathe between 14-20 breaths per minute.
A healthy person with healthy respiration actually breathes between 8-12 breaths per minute. When you breathe in this rhythm, all our bodily systems fall into place.
At its core, breathwork is the intentional practice of changing the way you breathe to influence your physical, emotional, and energetic state.
That might sound simple, but the impact is anything but. Our breath is directly linked to our nervous system. It reflects how we feel—and also influences how we feel. When we breathe consciously and fully, we tell our body it’s safe. We allow it to relax, to release, and to reset.
There are many styles of breathwork, from slow and restorative to fast and transformational. Whether you’re seeking emotional healing, spiritual connection, or simply a quiet space to be, breathwork meets you where you are.
The Gentle Power of the Breath
Most of us go through our days breathing shallowly and unconsciously—especially when life gets busy. And let’s be honest, living in Sydney, we’re no strangers to the juggle. Between school drop-offs, long commutes, demanding careers, and full calendars, it’s easy to slip into survival mode.
But here’s the magic:
When you return to your breath, you return to yourself.
Breathwork can help with:
- Stress and anxiety
- Sleep issues
- Back and shoulder pain
- Emotional overwhelm
- Low energy
- Improved blood flow
- Creative blocks
- Healing past emotional wounds
And the best part? It doesn’t require anything but you and your breath.
What Happens in a Breathwork Session?
With me, Beth Lewis, sessions are always held in a calm, welcoming space— in-person in Sydney’s North.
We begin with checking in with how you’re feeling emotionally, physically, and energetically, then slowly start to ground you into presence. I’ll guide you through carefully curated breath flows tailored to your personal needs. Sometimes this is deeply calming; other times it may help move stuck energy or release stored emotions.
There’s often music, (including sound healing and Reiki), soft guidance, and space for tears, laughter, or stillness. Every session is unique—just like you.
Who Is Breathwork For?
Breathwork is for anyone who:
- Feels stuck, tired, or disconnected
- Carries emotional stress, anxiety, or past trauma
- Craves a deeper connection with themselves
- Wants to feel more peaceful, aligned, and present
- Struggles with health issues and/or chronic pain
Whether you’re a mum who rarely gets time to herself, a professional burning the candle at both ends, or simply curious about a more intuitive way to support your well-being—breathwork can be your sanctuary.
A Loving Invitation
You don’t need to be a “spiritual person.” You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to show up—with your breath and a willingness to soften.
As someone who’s walked through stress, overwhelm, and self-disconnection, I’ve witnessed first-hand the transformation that happens when we remember how to breathe again—with intention.
If you’re ready to experience the calm, clarity, connection, and transformation to your overall wellbeing breathwork can bring, I invite you to book a session with me today. Whether it’s a one-on-one breathwork session or a couples breathwork session to help you both reconnect and deepen your bond, you’ll be held in a safe, nurturing space designed just for you.
